Essex Sunshine Coast

Discover the Essex Sunshine Coast, the Tendring Coast and Countryside…  Brightlingsea, Clacton-on-Sea, Dovercourt, Frinton-on-Sea, Harwich, Jaywick Sands, Manningtree, Mistley, St Osyth , Walton-on-the-Naze and surrounding areas.

There is lots to discover in and around the Essex Sunshine Coast, with over 36 miles of stunning coastline, a diverse blend of picturesque villages and beautifully unspoiled country landscapes.

Events take place throughout the year from open gardens and heritage open days to cycle tours and car rallies.  2023 sees the annual Clacton Airshow celebrate 30 years of thrilling flight displays taking place along Clacton’s spectacular seafront on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th August.

The Essex Sunshine Coast has a vibrant arts and culture scene, alive with theatres, performance arts events, live music and exhibitions.  A House for Essex, Wrabness, is artwork in itself.  This unique and incomparable house, overlooking the river Stour, was designed by the county’s own Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry.

History and heritage is in abundance throughout.  Its coastal location provides unique and varied heritage, from prehistoric artefacts and medieval buildings to Victorian villas, with many sites recognised as being of national significance.  The Mayflower trail, Harwich, is a visitor trail exploring the story of the Mayflower ship detailing its links to the founding of modern America.  The Master of the Mayflower, Christopher Jones’s house, still stands in this historic town today.

The areas, nature reserves and bird sanctuaries provide excellent opportunities for bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts.  The Tendring District is known for its diverse range of dynamic natural environment which benefits from national and, in some cases, international conservation designations. Hamford Water National Nature Reserve, an area of international importance, is itself, a sanctuary for migrating and nesting birds.  It also forms the setting to Arthur Ransome’s eighth book in his Swallows and Amazons series, the Secret Water.

The vastness of the Tendring coastline is ideal for seaside walks.  Take a stroll against the backdrop of the North Sea, along one of the promenades and breathe in the bracing sea air whilst taking in the view of the floral displays featured in the cliff top gardens or admire the unique charm and character of the pastel-coloured beach huts stretching along the coastline.

Away from the coast and countryside, the main towns offer a unique selection of independent shops and popular high street names or if you are looking to whet your appetite, an array of country pubs, bars, restaurants, fish and chip shops, cafés and coffee shops are in abundance and offer a warm welcome.

Accommodation ranges from holiday parks, glamping and camping, bed and breakfasts to boutique and luxury hotels spas.

With easy links by road, train, coach, ferry and plane, and the centre of London only an hour or so away, makes it an easily accessible destination.
